Ceramic Tile Refinishing and Repairing

Tiling tips for a stylish bathroom

Bathrooms sometimes get left out when home renovations take place. It can be a challenge to get creative with such a tiny space, especially when you only spend half an hour a day in there.

But creating your own personal style doesn’t have to begin with your closet and end at the bedroom doorway. Why not turn your bathroom into a luxurious space worth spending the extra time in?

You could go all out with these design trends, or keep it simple by making an artwork of your bathroom tiling. Here’s how.

Keep the floors and walls the same

Contrasting colours might make sense, but keeping the walls and floors matchy-matchy will streamline the decor. Add some punches of colours with bathroom accessories. By keeping your tiles the same colour as your walls, you’ll avoid chopping up the bathroom. This ultimately makes a tiny space look proportionally smaller. Opt for lighter colours and watch your space visually expand.

“White on white is one thing that has never gone out of fashion,” says Susan Cleveland, senior designer at Smarter Bathrooms. “If you get handmade tiles, they’ll give you a lot of texture and stand out that way.

“Then you can add contrast around the vanity: black tapware, polished nickel and a textured vanity are very popular right now.”

Keep the floor in focus

If you’re opting for an adventurous style and have a bit more space to play with, mix it up with a feature floor. Larger tiles will make the surface look bigger and on the plus side will mean less grout to clean. Or opt to spark your imagination with a terracotta tilework.

Choose materials that look better with age, as floor tiles will tend to mellow as the years go by.

“Opt for porcelain tiles, or change the way you lay them. You can go for a one-third offset, or a French lay using different sizes, or even go for a digital print to replicate natural textures.”

Choose your colours wisely… or, preferably, not at all

While it might be tempting to add dramatic pops of colour to your bathroom, it’s best to keep the trendy hues in temporary form. You might appreciate a Marsala-tinted mosaic feature wall today, but in 10 years’ time you might just find yourself gutting and retiling to keep up with the times again.

“Colour will always date, just like fashion. Instead, incorporate colours around your mirrors and cabinetry, or choose some brightly coloured terracotta towels,” suggests Cleveland.

Leave it to the experts

“I only do a bathroom one way – gut it and rebuild it,” explains Cleveland. “It’s not an easy thing to do. Always choose a bathroom designer if you want to retile your bathroom. They’ll give you a lot of extra detail that will shine through in the end product, and will help prevent a lot of expensive mistakes.”

Keep project management a priority, and pay attention to scheduling – it’s likely you’ll have a whole team helping with Project Dream Bathroom. And you’ll want to make sure you’ve chosen the best team for the job too.

In the glamorous world of interior design, bathrooms can often get the short end of the stick, particularly if you’re not a morning person. Create a space worthy of capturing your attention and it might just make getting out of bed that much easier.
